Diseases of gums are pathological conditions that affect the underlying bone support or the periodontal tissues and cause inflammation. Diseased gums appear reddish or bluish or swollen and bleed in few cases. It can also increase in size to cover the whole teeth and their crown.
Most commonly we have two types of diseases that occur in people :
Gingivitis: Inflammation of gums which is seen most commonly in people due to poor oral hygiene or underlying diseases.
Periodontitis: inflammation that extends to the underlying bone and tissues of the teeth.
So let’s talk about the first one which is Gingivitis in which the inflammation of gums occurs and that can be related to several factors which we have already mentioned above. Pregnancy, metabolic conditions of the body, stress, change in water all it can also cause chronic gingivitis which is the normal inflation of the gums. The symptoms include bleeding from the gums, swelling in the gums, reddish inflammation in the gums, etc. it can also cause a burning sensation in some cases. Gingivitis can be generalized which means covering the whole oral cavity involving all the teeth whereas localized gingivitis is the localization of the disease is a part of the girl city
So, let’s talk more about the inflammation extending to your bones and tissues of teeth ie. Periodontal inflammation or periodontitis.
This disease shows various manifestations as follows :
- Formation of pockets within the gums
- Recession of gums and furcation involvement
- Periodontal destruction leading to mobility of teeth.
- In Severe cases loss of tooth is seen.
What are the risk factors for periodontal diseases?
There are various factors that decide the propagation of this disease in any person.
- The rate of attack of the bacterial species or it’s virulence nature decides the amount of destruction of the periodontal fibers .
- Underlying diseases like diabetes , leukaemia , Down syndrome , HIV infection i.e immunocompromised patients are at more risk.
- Smokers are again at high risk of periodontal diseases.
- Diet can also have a great impact on the severity of the disease.
- Patients under stress are another people who are at high risk for such diseases.
How to prevent such gum diseases from happening?
It’s already seen that in many people, gum diseases can be prevented by religiously practicing plaque removal and maintaining good oral hygiene.
- Proper brushing technique should be followed for removal of debris and plaque from getting deposited on the teeth.
- Flossing regularly can help in removing the stuck debris and preventing plaque formation in between the teeth or the embrasures.
- Good diet, preventing stress and stopping smoking can help people in maintaining good oral hygiene.
The oral and general health of the body is linked so not only these measures are to be followed but taking good care of your health also helps in preventing such diseases. For ex-diabetic and leukaemia patients are at higher risk of severe periodontal diseases.
